Encaustic Materials & Supplies

Core Encaustic Tools: These are the beginner tools most artists use to melt and fuse wax.

  • Adjustable temperature electric griddle or hot plate
  • Heat gun (a hair dryer won’t work) with adjustable temperature options
  • Hard wood panels to work on
  • Hake brushes (soft flat brush for applying even layers of wax)
  • Window fan or other ventilation

 

Encaustic Mediums & Paints: These materials give you beautiful luminosity and texture in your work.

  • Encaustic medium (wax + damar resin)
  • Encaustic paints or pigmented wax sticks
  • Dry pigments, oil pastels, or artists’ oil paints for color and effects

 

Photography & Print Supplies: For photo-based encaustic work.

  • Matte digital printing paper for your images
  • Printer or commercial printing service
  • Yes! Paste or glue to mount your photographs
  • Tissue paper for non-traditional prints

 

Everyday & Workshop Tools: Helpful items that make the process easier

  • Chip brushes
  • Vegetable oil
  • Straight-edge razor blades or X-Acto knives
  • Paper towels and foam rollers
  • Putty knife
  • Painters Tape

 

Optional Extras: These aren’t necessary to begin, but many artists find them helpful

  • Stencils
  • Disposable gloves
  • Watercolor paints or other mixed-media materials
  • torch or iron for more advanced fusing
