I'm Clare O'Neill
Hi, I’m Clare O’Neill.
I’m an artist, photographer, and teacher who helps artists turn their photographs into one-of-a-kind encaustic work they truly love.
I was immediately drawn to encaustic the first time I encountered it. I didn’t know much about the medium—or whether photographs would even work in wax—but curiosity pulled me in, and I started experimenting. Over time, I explored photo transfers, mounted prints, and tissue paper, eventually falling in love with the depth and luminosity that tissue paper embedded in wax makes possible.
My work is built slowly, layer by layer, using bold brushstrokes, drips, and gesture to create movement and energy. I tend to work large, printing photographs on tissue paper in sections and carefully embedding them into layers of hot beeswax.
For more than a decade, I’ve been teaching photo encaustic—both online and in person—alongside exhibiting and selling my work. Teaching has become a meaningful extension of my own creative practice.
I often think of learning encaustic like learning to drive a stick shift. At first, you’re focused on the mechanics. But once that part clicks, you’re free to enjoy the open road. My goal is to help artists get to that place—where technique supports vision, and the work feels personal, confident, and true.
