Like Minded People

It’s all about relationships……

I know we all know this, but it bears repeating…..it’s all about relationships. It’s about finding ‘like minded people’ or as some say, ‘finding your tribe.’ I do a fair amount of social media, but there is no shortcut for building a genuine relationship with another person. I’m reminded of this every time I teach a studio workshop. Online teaching is great, but there is no replacement for meeting face-to-face and getting to know someone.

For me, I feel most nourished when I’m around people and this has been a great week as I had the opportunity to meet a whole bunch of ‘like minded people’.

I’ve known my good friend Tami Bone for several years now, but we had never met until this week when I flew to Austin as a pre-workshop excursion. We’ve spent hours on the phone talking about our art and our businesses. She has written a guest blog post for me and we’ve followed each other’s work, but it was only this week we finally met face to face. We had a long lunch, went gallery hopping and finished the day at Photo Methode Gallery where Christa Blackwood and Tina Weitz were busy hanging Christa’s show. (I’m just sorry I missed the opening this weekend…..it’s an amazing show.)

The highlight of the trip thus far has been my new friend, Lyn Belisle. I’ve known for some time that she is a dynamo, but I am now completely in-awe of her. And I am so honored to be able to teach back-to-back workshops at her studio in San Antonio.  In a short time of knowing her I have found her to be one of the most generous artists I know. She is truly dedicated to creating a space for creative belonging.

Relationships change when you meet face-to-face. The connection shifts. There can be no substitute for building a genuine relationship with another human being, and that’s a wonderful thing, right?

As an artist it’s so important to find people we resonate with. I know I feel most at home with people who understand me, support me, lift me up, help me grow, recharge me, inspire me, celebrate me, and are there to be my ally in my artistic pursuits. I think I’ve found a few more people this last week who I’m proud to add to my list of ‘like minded people’.

Today is a new week and a new two-day workshop at Lyn’s studio. I wonder whom I’ll meet and be able to add to my tribe!

Would love to hear from you about how you’ve found your tribe.

Be well….be creative,
