Watch a Photo Encaustic Painting Come to Life — Start to Finish
There’s something powerful about seeing the entire creative process unfold.
Not just the finished piece.
Not just a single technique.
But every decision—from image selection to the final layer of wax.
In My Studio is a rare behind-the-scenes look at Clare O’Neill’s complete photo encaustic workflow—something she has never shared in full before and something artists typically only experience by attending her in-person Wyoming Ranch Workshop.
Now, you can step into her studio and watch it all happen.
Behind the Scenes of Photo Encaustic Art
Many artists learn techniques in isolation—but rarely get to see how everything comes together in a single piece.
That’s often where confidence breaks down.
Seeing the full arc of a piece—from concept to completion—removes mystery. It shows how decisions connect, how problems are solved in real time, and how a finished work evolves through thoughtful steps rather than perfection.
This mini-course exists to answer the question artists ask again and again:
“What does the entire process actually look like?”
If you’ve ever wished you could simply watch over someone’s shoulder as they work—this is that opportunity.
This two-part video course takes you through an entire creative process—from a photo shoot to a finished 30×30 photo encaustic painting.
You’ll watch Clare:
– Choose an image from a real photo shoot
– Prepare and manipulate the digital image
– Tile the image for working on a large panel
– Print on each of the four tiled pieces of tissue paper
– Embed the multiple tissue paper prints into encaustic to make it look like one
– Build the surface layer by layer as the painting takes shape
Everything is demonstrated step by step, with tips and insights to simplify your own process. This is not a highlight reel. It’s the real process—decisions, pacing, adjustments, and all.

About Clare O’Neill
Hi. I’m Clare, a photographer, mixed-media artist, and educator specializing in photo encaustic. For more than a decade, I’ve taught artists around the world how to combine photography and wax to create layered, luminous work with depth and intention.
In My Studio is the first time I’ve shared my complete creative process—from photo shoot to finished encaustic painting—outside of an in-person workshop. In this course, you’ll see how I choose and prepare images, tile and print tissue paper, and build a large-scale encaustic piece step by step, in real time.
My teaching goes beyond technique. I’m most passionate about helping artists understand how decisions connect across a piece, trust their instincts, and work with greater clarity and confidence in the studio.
This course is ideal for you if:
- You already have basic experience with photography and encaustic
- You learn best by watching real processes unfold
- You want to see how techniques connect inside one finished piece
- You’re curious about working larger and embedding multiple images
- You want insight into artistic decision-making—not just technique
It’s especially valuable if you’ve ever attended (or wished you could attend) one of Clare’s in-person workshops and wanted to see the full process up close.
This course may not be a good fit if:
- You’re brand new to encaustic or photo encaustic
- You’re looking for a quick overview rather than detailed observation
- You prefer short, technique-only demonstrations
This is a deeper, observational course designed for artists ready to connect the dots.

FAQ's
Do I need prior experience with photo encaustic to take this course?
Yes. This course is designed for artists who already have a basic understanding of working with photographs and encaustic medium. It is not intended as a beginner introduction.
How much encaustic experience do I need?
You should have a basic understanding of the medium since this video is process driven rather than a teaching video.
Is this a start-to-finish demonstration of one artwork?
Yes. You’ll watch the complete process unfold—from selecting an image after a photo shoot to printing, tiling, embedding tissue paper, and building the final encaustic painting.
How is this course structured?
The course is broken into two videos: 1. Preparing, tiling, and printing the image. 2. Embedding the image into wax and building the painting surface
Will I see how you work on large-scale encaustic pieces?
Yes. The demonstration focuses on creating a 30×30 encaustic artwork, including working with multiple tissue paper prints and building a cohesive surface at scale.
Is this the same as your Eatons’ Ranch workshop?
No. While the imagery comes from my Wyoming Ranch workshop, this course is a behind-the-scenes studio demonstration. It does not replace an in-person workshop but offers rare insight into the full process.
Will this course teach specific techniques or more about process?
Both. You’ll learn practical techniques (tiling, printing, embedding) while also gaining insight into pacing, decision-making, and how a piece evolves from start to finish.
How long do I have access to the course?
You’ll receive instant access to the videos upon purchase and can watch them at your own pace..
Is this course downloadable?
Yes. All of our courses are downloadable and are accessed on your computer.
Is this course refundable?
Due to the nature of digital content and immediate access, all sales are final.
