2
Painting Your Photograph
Learn how to print and mount your images, understand the importance of paper selection, and explore effective printing techniques. You’ll work with substrates and grounds, practice fusing methods, and experiment with painting your photographs using encaustic paints, pigments, oil sticks, pastels, and watercolor.
3
Working with Special Effects
Explore creative techniques for adding depth and visual interest, including masking lines with tape, inlaying wax, intaglio, layering and scraping, embedding objects, shellac burns, and creating both smooth and richly textured surfaces.
4
Embedding Non-Traditional Papers
Explore collage as a creative approach by embedding non-traditional papers and learning how to build layered wax backgrounds that bring depth, texture, and richness to your images.
5
Photo Transfers
Go deeper into collage by incorporating photo transfers into your work. You’ll learn how to prepare smooth wax surfaces and successfully transfer images, adding subtle layers and visual complexity to your pieces.

FAQ's
What supplies will I need?
This is a mixed media course, so you’ll need a variety of supplies. I’ve broken everything down into essentials and optional extras to make it manageable. Once you register, you’ll have access to a comprehensive materials list you can download, along with the option to purchase a class kit if you prefer not to source items individually. If you’d like an idea of what’s needed click here.
Is there a class kit available?
Yes. For students who prefer a streamlined option, a class kit is available and includes many of the essential materials used throughout the course. Full details—including what’s included and how to purchase—are provided inside the classroom after you register. You’re also welcome to source your own supplies using the suggested materials list.
Do I need to be tech-savvy to take this course?
Not at all. If you can check email, access the internet, and watch videos on a laptop, tablet, or phone, you’ll be just fine. The classroom is easy to navigate, and support is available if you need help. Participation in the private Facebook group is optional and requires a personal Facebook account.
When does the course start?
The course begins March 2, 2026. You don’t need to be present every week—once lessons are released, you can download the materials and work at your own pace.
Are the classes live? Do I need to be available at specific times?
No live classes. Each week, pre-recorded lessons are released along with practice projects and downloadable resources. The first three weeks build foundational skills; the final three weeks focus on creative techniques and effects. There are no required login times, and you can access the classroom anytime while it’s open.
Do I have lifetime access to the course?
Yes—with an important note. You’ll have two weeks after the course ends to download all videos and materials to your computer for lifetime access. After that window closes, a fee will apply to regain access.
How is the course content delivered?
Every Monday, you’ll receive an email with links to that week’s lessons. The password-protected classroom includes instructional videos, downloadable guides, and additional resources. You’ll also have the option to join the private Facebook group for questions, feedback, and community discussion.
How long will the materials be available?
If you download the content during the access period, it’s yours to keep forever. I’ll be actively involved in the class Facebook group during the course, and afterward you’ll have the option to join the alumni group for ongoing connection and inspiration.
Will I need high-speed internet?
Yes. A stable, high-speed internet connection is recommended for streaming and downloading video content.
Is class size limited?
Yes. I value a supportive, engaged learning environment—large enough for rich discussion, but small enough to feel connected.
How much time should I plan to spend each week?
You’ll get out of the course what you put into it. I recommend setting aside 3–4 hours per week, similar to an in-person workshop. Much of photo encaustic is about experimentation and developing a feel for the wax, so you can work in short sessions or longer blocks—whatever suits your schedule.
How are payments handled?
Payments are securely processed through PayPal. You can pay using a PayPal account or a credit card.
What happens after I register?
You’ll receive a welcome email with login details for the classroom. Inside, you’ll find setup guidance, safety information, materials lists, and an invitation to join the private Facebook group. If you don’t see the email, please check your spam folder.
Do I have to participate in the Facebook group?
No. Participation is completely optional. That said, it’s the best place to ask questions and learn from others. The course is designed as a group learning experience, and shared questions often benefit everyone.
When will the course be offered again?
The class is usually offered in March and October (but every once in awhile there is a summer course offered.)
Ready to look at your photographs in a new way?
Throughout the six weeks, you’ll be encouraged to reflect on your personal vision and explore how this process can elevate your photographs—whether you’re a professional photographer or simply enjoy shooting with your iPhone—and inspire you to create meaningful art.
By the end of the program, you’ll have stronger skills, renewed creative confidence, and original artwork ready to hang in your home or share in a gallery setting.
